Top Cow/Image has announced a new series from Zack Kaplan, Guilherme Balbi, Marco Lesko and Troy Peteri titled metal company. It’s a crazy idea that Top Cow calls Blade Runner meets Rocky. It launches its first issue on May 5, 2022.
“While our own technology, our politics and our world are changing faster than ever, unfortunately our society seems to be reacting with aggression and hostility,” Kaplan said in a statement to AIPT. “We resort to tribalism and allow our differences to be aired publicly for entertainment. I’ve always been inspired by great robot stories that remind us of our own experience, and I thought that by exploring this Rocky-style battle drama in a futuristic robot-ruled world, this shock-charged robot of human culture, and the “human” fighters who are dragged into these public battles, we might just learn something about our own humanity and our social conflicts today.

Together with new artist Guilherme Balbi, they have created a rich world in which readers can suspend disbelief and immerse themselves in the story. Balbi commented, “Creating a new world is always a big challenge, and even expanding because anything with ‘robots’ is even harder, but that’s exactly what makes this world so special. There are lots of details, threads and lots and lots of gears. I try to take a lot of inspiration from movies and references, and mix in things that I love. Understanding Zack’s vision for this project was very important to take another step in my growth as an artist, but in this work I took flight.

“Zack Kaplan is one of my favorite writers to work with,” said Top Cow President Matt Hawkins (COLOSSUS, REFLECTION), “And it is, in my humble opinion, his best work to date. METAL SOCIETY, artificial intelligence, robots… what more could you ask for?
