London indie-folk band Shrinari have released the music video for their single ‘Listen Up’.
The visual, which can be seen below, was directed by Frida Wiita with footage of the Brazilian Huni Kuin tribe shot by Scott Murden. Singer Lucidia Omamori had this to say about the significance of the song:
“I read a book as a teenager, which incorporates two speeches by American Indians titled, ‘How Can You Sell Air?’ (A Manifesto for the Earth). It evoked an innate understanding in me because I’ve always had a strong passion for environmental causes, I really cared about protecting the Earth and couldn’t understand the choices we were making to go against it.
This book came to mind when I was writing the song, more influenced by our shared time with the Huni Kuni people and Native Americans whose interdependence with the Earth and respect for her as our mother rings true. in all my being. It was beautiful to share this at the Extinction Rebellion protests in London. I hope the song inspires people to take environmental action in any way possible.”
Composer Rafael Marchante Angulo also had this to say about the track:
“Creating ‘Listen Up’ was a great adventure, it turned out to be quite experimental at first, the initial version was 90 seconds longer and had an extended mid-section. We decided to scale it down and then reworked it completely, adding Idris Rahman’s lush horn section and re-recording some instruments to take advantage of my improved recording skills two years later.
This song is about the obvious fact that when you live in immediate and constant contact with nature, you have a naturally unbreakable connection to it and there are things you would never do, let alone destroy the environment as it is being destroyed. due to our industrial blindness. Again, this is not a silly idea, although we like idyllic things: our very survival is in question. It’s a recurring theme in our songs because it’s such an important subject. Probably the most significant with the human rights violations around the world, from which indigenous defenders of ancestral lands and ways of life constantly suffer.
“Listen Up” is from Shrinari’s new studio album Hold on to hope, though, which is now available on digital services.
